Positive News Endorsements Positive News Achievements Positive News Endorsements Positive News is pleased to have received such heartfelt support and endorsements from so many community members. Here representing numerous compliments and statements of approval, are endorsements from Barbara Lifton, Carolyn Peterson, Paul Glover, Lauren Signer. "Positive News is a journal of empowerment. The articles free us from the constraints of the 'can’t do' mentality that controls so much of our everyday lives. The stories inspire and encourage us to face our collective problems squarely and honestly and to find creative and effective ways of solving them." Barbara Lifton, Member of the New York State Assembly, 125th district "I look forward to every new issue of Positive News. It is such a contrast to the usual negative fare of the mainstream media. Positive News provides us with a great opportunity to see how ordinary people here at home and around the world use common sense, imagination and an optimistic outlook to confront and deal with the whole range of issues and problems of modern society. Reading Positive News has become a habit that I don’t want to break." Carolyn K. Peterson, Mayor, City of Ithaca, NY "There’s a lot of negative news in the world, and if that’s all that people can think about, if that’s where our imaginations are locked, then things will spiral in that direction. That’s why we need a new medium for news about a better future that we all deserve and are capable of creating." -Paul Glover "It's good to be reminded of the positive energy in our community. Too often the focus is on the negative. Reading Positive News reminds me who I'm working for." Lauren Signer, Ithaca Chief of Police "I think of Positive News as I do our Alternative Community School--as providing an unique opportunity for people to see the world through a lens whose perspective focuses us on that which unconventionally beyond the mainstream, but that is rooted in building a capacity of progressive change and hope for the future." Joe Greenburg, Principal, Alternative Community School
Positive News Achievements Positive News has achieved incredible success in a relatively short time. The following is but a brief list of countless ways the paper has positively affected people across the US. Positive News circulates in prisons across the United States. Inspired by letters from people in prisons in Texas, California, and other states, a Positive News volunteer organized a benefit for Prisoner's Express, a program that sends literature to prisons around the country. Sonya Jerga, of Tompkins County Mental health, requested regular distribution of the paper, saying "This publication is much needed for our clients." Circulation has tripled within two years to 15,000 copies. A diverse volunteer network including senior citizens, home schoolers, high school and college students from the Ithaca region provides support for each issue. Additionally, volunteers from throughout the northeast US, and around the country - North Carolina, Michigan, California - regularly distribute the paper in their areas. At his final graduation address, the retiring principal and founder of the Ithaca public alternative community schools, David Lehman, highlighted the message and example of Positive News to students, parents, and faculty. A student intern from the school writes articles and helps produce and distribute the paper. Each Positive News subscriber was recently contacted by a volunteer, and every single individual re-subscribed. One person came to the office with a check ten minutes after receiving the phone call, and said, "Believe me, I need you more than you need me!" A professor from Cornell's Architecture and Planning School who saw a copy of Positive News at the MLK Jr. Celebration Day at the local Ithaca community center was inspired to distribute the paper throughout Cornell and give each of his students a copy. One of his students devoted their summer to help with the paper.
